RE: Log4net NOT working on .net 4.5

Dominik Psenner

Hi,

You provide not enough information so that someone could help you finding out what’s wrong. If you referenced the log4net DLL, configured the appenders properly and are writing some log messages but still nothing happens, it is always a good idea to enable log4net’s internal logging to trace what’s going on. All those steps should be covered in the FAQ section on the website.

Cheers,

D.

RE: Log4net NOT working on .net 4.5

I forgot to quote [1]. .NET 4.5 is not among the officially supported .NET frameworks yet. IMHO you should be able to use log4net’s .NET 4.0 build with the .NET 4.5 framework, but there may be unknown issues ahead. Please check [2] for changes that could break appenders you are using (i.e. if you are trying to use AdoNetAppender to log into a SQL Server 1997 database).

Cheers,

D.

RE: Log4net NOT working on .net 4.5

Dominik Psenner

Please post responses to the mailing list too.

Did you configure appenders for your projects as described at [1] and is your application spawning log events by invoking a method like log.Info(„foo“)?

I use log4net with .NET 4.5 all the time without problem.
The most common cause for no log file that I've heard of is that you build against one version of log4net and run against a different one, or have the wrong bindingRedirects in your .config file.

Thanks Andrew and George for your feedback. I expected that log4net works with .NET 4.5 - except for some cases that are covered in the migration article from microsoft. Please post a sample project that does not work and then maybe we are able to trace what's going wrong.

RE: Log4net NOT working on .net 4.5

It’s hard to answer this without sounding rude. However, log4net cannot convince your compiler to accept method statements where only types are allowed. Please read your way through your favorite C# tutorial. The one provided by the inventors of C# is located here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa288463(v=vs.71).aspx

Good luck!

yes, it's right after this:

public partial class Login : MetroForm

    {

        private static readonly log4net.ILog log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(Login));

       BasicConfigurator.Configure();

-> 'log4net.Config.BasicConfigurator.Configure(log4net.Repository.lLoggerRepository, params log4net.Appender.lAppender[])' is a 'method' but is used like a 'type'

RE: Log4net NOT working on .net 4.5

I’m glad you finally worked it out and I hope you learned something. In the future you should consult the manuals and check if you’re doing things how it’s written down in the manuals. Posting something like „all is setup correctly (I have used log4net in the past)“ without being sure can cause embarassing reactions. J

Cheers,

Generally it is good idea to configure logging system as early as possible to avoid such problem. Good place is Main() method of the class which starts the whole application.

Thank you for this tip. After months of struggling, this worked for me.
I'm using VS2017 with a C++ EXE, C# COM DLL and C# DLL.
The only way logging would work was if I avoided a config (xml) file completely. I coded the "configuration settings". But this only worked for the "root logger". I couldn't create my own loggers (they were ignored at runtime)

After your tip:
- I rebuilt the log4net project in VS2017 x64.
- Added [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(ConfigFile = "log4net.config")] to AssemblyInfo.cs
- Changed the C# project to reference this new log4net.dll.
- Copied the new log4net.dll, log4net.xml and log4net.config to the release folder of my main app (the C++ EXE), everything worked.
